I`m going to preface this by saying: Infographics AREN`T to be taken lightly! One of these days (oh, probably more than one) I`m going to unleash a rant of epic proportions about how horrible most long, skinny, `fad`infographics are. They give information graphics a bad name, mostly because they’re cavalier with both their presentation of facts and their treatment of data. I know I’m generalizing, but we’ve all seen enough of these to know that the ones with integrity are the exception, not the norm.
That being said, I think there is a time and a place for data visualization and information graphics to be used in an entertaining and unique way. Case in point: Here is a cute infographic that can be used to track monthly coffee consumption (From Column Five Media). Fun gimmick: paint in data with your brush and a cup o’ joe! You can pick one up for yourself for $29.95, here. That is, unless you live anywhere other than the United States, because shipping is twenty bucks. For that price you might as well just spill your coffee on a Visa bill, hang it on the wall and call it art.
